Fixed walls need flexible roofs

OpenBox: Ensuring the future for railroad wagons

When it came to transporting bulk goods, scrap, steel, coal and wood by rail, they were always number one: open bulk freight wagons from series such as Eanos or Eaos, Falns, Falns 121 or Falsn 183 to wagons of the Talns 968, 9771 or 979 series. These open bogie freight wagons offer a high loading space, high load limits with a continuous upper chord, and two double-wing doors on each side. The problem: Energy and climate change, as well as changes in certain sectors of the economy - coal and steel, for example - are leading to declining transport volumes. Do the wagons still have a future?

Yes to the sliding roof!

The search is therefore on for "smart" solutions that will enable the currently still "wagons for the rough" to also carry more sensitive goods on their way. For example, by equipping the wagons with a sliding roof that is easy to handle and retrofittable. And in fact, such a soft top solution for open freight wagons has been available for some time. Developed and built by Edscha TS, market leader sliding roofs for trucks, but at the same time also a leader in sliding roofs or railway wagons ...

Flexible roofs for fixed walls

Tarpaulins? Yes but ...

As a rule, the wagons are used to transport highly diverse goods. If they need to be protected separately, the use - for example, with a tarpaulin. Only a few years ago, it was very complicated to equip the rail vehicle with a loose tarpaulin or other covering. By means of a not exactly harmless climb, the heavy tarpaulin first had to be pulled over the wagon, lashed down by hand in a time-consuming process and demonstrably secured properly. Depending on the load, it was possible that the actual payload would then still have to be reduced in order to comply with the railway's high safety guidelines throughout.

The solution

A technically ingenious solution to almost all problems with the open wagons was then developed by Edscha TS. The sliding roof specialist based in Moers in the Lower Rhine region used its many years of experience and special know-how in the rail sector, modified the successful OpenBox concept and adapted it to the requirements of the railroads and the transport of goods by rail. Edscha TS thus simultaneously set an example for more sustainability and environmental protection, because the use of the wagon for other goods, for example, was thus considerably expanded.

Wagons become highly profitable

Thanks to the innovation from Edscha TS with the OpenBox Railway sliding roof, which weighs only approx. 300 kg (on a length of 10 m) and for which a patent application has been filed, every E-wagon can now be opened safely and conveniently from the side from below in a short time. Due to the bolted and floating suspension of the rails, retrofitting is easy and allows deformations of up to approx. 60 mm. The canopy has been designed according to the criteria for combined traffic according to EN 283 / UIC 592 and has passed the static tests for tunnel encounter traffic. The TÜV confirms that the classification as an E-wagon is maintained even with a retrofitted soft top.

More in the cash register. Less effort.

So how does OpenBox Railway work? Quite simply like an accordion, which is attached to the top of the wagon roof with a special fastening. The system is designed as a one-man solution and can be retracted or extended unproblematically and very easily by just one worker without any great effort. The operation itself is done by a lever and a rod connected to it, which opens or closes the roof.

Full load capacity

The design of OpenBox Railway allows maximum utilization of the loading capacity of the wagon equipped with it and "of course" protects the goods in the wagons from adverse weather conditions. Another advantage is that OpenBox Railway increases the energy efficiency of the entire train. The design of the roof ensures that the water runs off easily when it rains and the structure is not exposed to corrosion.

Excellent solution for the railway

The bottom line is that Edscha OpenBox Railway is a small revolution for handling rail transports quickly, safely and, above all, economically. Together with OpenBox Industry, OpenBox Event, OpenBox Agrar and other professional applications, the system is the number one for hood solutions for fixed-wall superstructures.
