The sliding bow system roofs for goods wagons by Edscha Trailer Systems are renowned around the world for optimum cover and efficiency with easy operation. This is not a coincidence, after all the developers of rail solutions profit from long-term experience in the manufacture of roof systems for commercial vehicles. The latest Edscha TS roof for open freight cars in the standard design E – called the OpenBox RailWay – increases the operating comfort and the efficiency of this wagon class.
Edscha Trailer Systems is a global player. The new ideas and products relating to the truck and trailer roof have made the inventor of the sliding truck roof to the market leader in Europe. This company has also produced and developed previously unachieved levels of efficiency and reliability for goods transportation by rail with its roof systems for freight cars.
The latest product is called OpenBox RailWay. Developed and constructed by practically thinking engineers, it is a brilliantly simple, technical solution that has been registered for patent approval and that transfers the comfort of a modern Edscha TS roof to E-wagons. Thus, the days of difficult, time-consuming covering work with loose tarpaulins, which was also dangerous for the railway workers, are over. It is often possible to do without the heavy Tamns freight cars with a fixed tarpaulin or unwieldy hinged covers if conversions are made to the OpenBox RailWay roof. The new Edscha TS roof weighs only 300 kg for a ten-metre length and thus guarantees a higher payload. Further advantages are the protection of the load from rain (weight increase) and wind (loss of material) as well as saving energy through a substantial improvement of the cw-value when the roof is closed, both with and without a load.
The OpenBox RailWay roof is designed in such a way that it can be opened and closed by one person from below and the side in a short time. The screws and the floating suspension of the rails make the retrofitting of the system fast and simple. Even with deformations of up to 60 mm the roof still runs smoothly and stays sealed. And if a repair is necessary at any time then the roof is ready for use again very quickly thanks to the modular structure comprising steel rails and exchangeable segments.
OpenBox RailWay is designed according to the criteria for combined transport in line with EN 283 / UIC 592 and has passed the static tests for traffic meeting in tunnels. The TÜV certification authority confirms that the classification as E-wagon also remains with a retrofitted roof. Thus, the OpenBox RailWay system is not subject to any certification limitations and can be used universally.
